EMDR Therapy in Barrie & Orillia
Past experiences can affect how you feel about yourself, connect with others, and respond to everyday situations. You may know that an experience is over, yet still feel anxious or overwhelmed when something reminds you of it.
At Bay View Therapy Centre, our EMDR clinicians help you work through distressing experiences, with preparation and support throughout treatment.
What Is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based psychotherapy best established as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
EMDR addresses distressing memories and the emotions, beliefs, and physical sensations connected to them. You may understand that an experience was not your fault while still carrying feelings of blame or shame.
The goal is to help you remember what happened with less distress and develop more helpful beliefs about yourself.
What Counts as Trauma?
Trauma can involve accidents, violence, assault, or life-threatening events. Lasting emotional distress can also develop through repeated experiences within relationships, including childhood abuse, neglect, or a lack of consistent care and safety. These experiences are sometimes described as relational or attachment trauma.
Their effects may include difficulty trusting others, feeling on edge, or believing you are not good enough. These patterns can have many causes; a therapist can help you understand your experience.
Not every painful experience meets the diagnostic definition of trauma used for PTSD. You can still seek support for experiences that affect your well-being.
Do I Need a PTSD Diagnosis to Try EMDR?
No. You do not need a PTSD diagnosis to discuss EMDR with a therapist.
EMDR has its strongest research support as a treatment for PTSD. Your therapist will assess your concerns and discuss whether EMDR, another approach, or a combination of approaches may be appropriate.
How Does EMDR Work?
During memory processing, your therapist guides you to briefly focus on aspects of a distressing experience while using bilateral stimulation—usually side-to-side eye movements, alternating taps, or sounds.
This process can help reduce distress associated with the memory. Researchers continue to study exactly how EMDR produces these changes.
What Happens During EMDR Therapy?
EMDR begins with understanding your experiences and preparing you for memory processing. Your therapist guides you through the eight phases below, adjusting the pace to your needs and readiness. You can ask questions, pause, or stop at any point.
The Eight Phases of EMDR Therapy
EMDR follows eight phases, with time spent on each depending on your needs. Preparation may take several appointments, and phases can be revisited throughout treatment.
1. History Taking and Treatment Planning
Your therapist explores what brings you to therapy, your history, and the supports available to you. Together, you identify experiences to address and plan a pace that considers your readiness.
2. Preparation
Your therapist explains EMDR, answers your questions, and helps you develop strategies for managing difficult emotions. You have time to build trust and become comfortable with the process before beginning memory work.
3. Assessment
You choose a memory to focus on and explore the images, beliefs, emotions, and physical sensations connected to it. Your therapist uses rating scales to understand your distress and how believable a more helpful belief feels.
4. Desensitization
While briefly focusing on the memory, you follow guided eye movements, taps, or sounds. Your therapist checks in as thoughts, feelings, and sensations shift, with the aim of reducing the memory’s emotional intensity.
5. Installation
Once distress has reduced, you focus on strengthening a helpful belief about yourself in relation to the experience. Bilateral stimulation supports this part of the process.
6. Body Scan
You bring the memory and helpful belief to mind while checking for physical discomfort. If tension or distress remains, your therapist helps you work through it.
7. Closure
Each processing session ends with support to reconnect with the present and feel more settled, even if the memory needs further work. Your therapist also helps you prepare for anything you may notice between appointments.
8. Reevaluation
At the next appointment, you check how the previously processed memory feels and discuss any changes since your last session. This helps guide whether to continue working on that experience or move to another focus.
Common Questions About EMDR
Do I Have to Describe Everything in Detail?
EMDR generally does not require a detailed account of every part of an experience. Your therapist will explain what information is needed while respecting your comfort and readiness.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Treatment length varies depending on your history, goals, current circumstances, and preparation needs. Your therapist will review your progress with you and adjust the plan as needed.
How Do I Choose a Trauma Therapist?
Look for a regulated mental health professional with training and experience relevant to your concerns. If you are considering EMDR, ask about their EMDR training specifically.
Useful questions include:
- What experience do you have supporting people with concerns like mine?
- How do you assess whether EMDR is appropriate?
- How do you help clients prepare and manage distress?
- What other treatment approaches do you offer?
Feeling heard, having your questions welcomed, and being involved in treatment decisions are important parts of finding a good fit.
